Here’s another important key to being blessed through our work: thoughtfulness. It doesn’t matter what position we hold – a CEO, a manager, an IT tech, a cleaner or an admin person – thoughtfulness is necessary in building a character that reflects God.
You might have a flashy job title that invites respect, but you actually earn respect through your work ethic and attitude. In the Old Testament, many people earned their living by farming and raising cattle, so Solomon gave this advice: ‘Know well the condition of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds’ (Proverbs 27:23 NASB).
Good leaders make sure they know the needs, strengths, weaknesses, potential, and motivational levels of the people who work with them. And that also applies in our families, sports teams, and in group projects at school, to name a few.
When a team member is struggling, sometimes our thoughtfulness, understanding, and interest in them can be a powerful motivator. Putting people down or taking them for granted only guarantees resentment. When we really care about others, we’ll try to bring out the best in them.
And if you’re an employee, God promises, ‘Whoever protects their master will be honoured’ (v.18 NIVUK). If we keep criticising those in authority, we lose trust and credibility.
If we resent our position as followers, we’ll never become qualified to be leaders. The Bible says we’re supposed to speak well of those in authority over us (see Titus 3:1-2). (But remember, if there’s a genuine problem, it’s important to speak out honestly.)
If you struggle with people having authority over you, talk to God about your feelings. He’ll help you change your perspective.
Do you feel that you need to strive for a flashy title or glamorous-sounding job in order to be successful and gain respect? If that thought resonates with you, ask God to help you remember that we can earn true respect, whatever place we hold, simply by treating others with kindness, care, and thoughtfulness.
