Paradise of Reflection by Chidi Obasi – Chapter One: An Exemplary Life

AN EXEMPLARY LIFE

1 Thessalonians 1:6-7, ESV And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.

1 Timothy 4:12-13,  Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.

The reason why man youths are despised today is that they chose to live their own kind of lifestyle. Self-lifestyle has no example to all that believe in Christ, thus he made these statements and encouragements to the Thessalonians and to Timothy as a youth. Would you impact other youths without setting examples?

Be an example in all areas of life:

  • Fashion
  • Conversation/Talking
  • Thought
  • Reading
  • Environment
  • Eating/Drinking etc.

Exemplary life of a believer does not only end in the house, it also manifests in your fashion, what kind of clothes do you put on for an outing? Are they exposing your breasts or other inner body parts? That can not make you impact lives in your generation, it will only corrupt those who are really looking up to you for change. Have you observed that some rape and abuse cases are as a result of indecent dressing? Yes, it is the truth. If a young woman dresses in a decent manner, there is no way she can be abused or raped by anyone except in few cases of the perpetrators been possessed.

Then things that proceed out of your mouth? what kind of conversation do you engage yourself with? Do you engage your time in conversation that brings displeasure to your Creator, our God? Sometimes, when you get closer to youths you will be marveled at what conversation you hear. You need to adjust your words; tame your tongue, speak that which can glorify God.

‘So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God’ – 1 Corinthians 10:31, RSV. I had a friend who always discussed unnecessary matters that stimulated my mind for sins of the flesh (Fornication). But when I realized the truth in the message (The WORD) I deserted him. We stopped talking on the phone and I made him understand why I was no longer coming around and the need for him to change. Until his change comes I will never come closer to him.

Moreover that which proceeds from your mouth must have been thought in your heart.

Ephesians 4:29-20 says, Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. You know it, ”Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” For that reason, Life Manual (The Bible) for-warned man to guard his heart with all diligence for out of it flows the issues of life.

Channel your mind, intelligence, time, and energy toward things that are of great benefit, things that will uplift your heart and also give glory to God. When you exercise your time in reading and studying, there will be no room for evil thoughts.

Reading and understanding what? Of course, the word that never fails, the compass, the manual of life. I mean the Word of God. Some youths can’t read many pages of the Bible but would read through James Hadley Chase, Mills & Moon, and Romances timelessly.
