MFM Daily Devotional Thursday 17 June 2021 – Effective Prayer
MFM DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR THURSDAY 17TH JUNE 2021 WRITTEN BY PASTOR D. K. OLUKOYA
TOPIC: EFFECTIVE PRAYER
Fire Scripture: Matthew 6:9-16; Luke 11:1-4
Today’s Outline: MFM Daily Devotional 17 June 2021 For Thursday
It is one thing to pray and another thing to pray effectively. Effective prayer is not selfish but prayed with love. It must be said in line with the will of God and in the name of Jesus Christ. It brings down the hands of God to move in your situation.
For you to pray effectively also, it must be in line with the example that Jesus gave when His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray during His sermon on the mount, as we read in our Fire Scriptures today.
The first ingredient of effective prayer is reverence to God, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” This indicates that God is holy and awesome. It is a statement of praise and commitment to honour God. The second ingredient is acknowledgment of His sovereignty: “Thy Kingdom come.” You must acknowledge God’s supremacy over all.

The third ingredient is to ask for His will: “Thy will be done.” This is praying God’s will and not your will. The fourth ingredient is relying on God’s provision: “Give us this day”. Note that God’s provision is to be asked on daily basis and you must make God as your provider. The Lord’s Prayer did not say “these days” but “this day”.
Trust God daily to provide your needs. The fifth ingredient of effective prayer is forgiveness. Jesus taught His disciples to forgive those that offended them, so that their heavenly Father will forgive them. We too must forgive those that have wronged us.
The measure with which you forgive, that is the measure you too will receive forgiveness. Prayer prayed with an unforgiving heart can never be effective. Jesus said, if you bring your sacrifices or offerings (prayer and thanksgiving) to the altar and you have somebody that has offended you, you must go and reconcile first with that person so that your prayer will be answered (Matt. 5:23-24).
The sixth ingredient is to avoid temptation: “And lead us not into temptation.” As Christians, sometimes, we struggle with temptations but God has promised that He will not allow us to be tempted beyond our endurance (1 Cor. 10:13).
In your prayer, ask God to help you to recognise temptation, because sometimes it looks so subtle, and also give you strength to overcome it.
So beloved, for your prayer to be effective, it must include all the ingredients mentioned in the Lord’s Prayer. It must also be word-based.
Memory Verse: 1 John 5:14 – “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us”
Motivational Quote: Prayer is your key to open the day and the key to lock the night
Prophetic Word: Your arrow of prayer will locate the forehead of your Goliath, in the name of Jesus.
HYMN: What a friend we have in Jesus
Verse 1
What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Verse 2
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Verse 3
Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
